Vaporetto tips Venice: validation, peak times & common mistakes
Everything you need to know before your first trip on the waterbus - from ticket validation to the right stop.
Validate your ticket - compulsory for every journey
The most important rule with the Vaporetto: the ticket must be validated at the electronic reader at the stop before each journey - even with a multi-day pass. Failure to validate your ticket could result in a fine of €60 or more, even if you have a valid ticket in your pocket.
How the devaluation works
- Gray-white reader at every stop
- Hold the ticket against the device until the green light + beep
- The gate opens automatically at stops with turnstiles
- Even with a multi-day pass: validate for each individual journey
Fines may be imposed without validation
- Inspectors („verificatori“ in Italian) arrive unannounced
- Penalty: standard rate + fine (effectively €60 or more)
- A valid but not validated ticket is also penalized
- There is no goodwill - the rule is consistently enforced
Redeem online vouchers at the machine
If you have purchased your vaporetto ticket online, you will receive a voucher with a PNR booking code by email. You must convert this voucher into a physical ticket at an ACTV machine in Venice before you can board.
Find PNR code
The code can be found under the QR code on your voucher. It is a combination of letters and numbers.
Enter at the machine
ACTV machines (yellow) can be found at the train station, Piazzale Roma and all major stops. Change the language to German, then enter the PNR code.
Print ticket
The machine prints out all the tickets ordered at once (credit card format). Validity only begins when the ticket is first validated, not when it is printed.
Avoid peak times
The vaporetti are extremely crowded at certain times - especially line 1 through the Grand Canal. If possible, avoid the following times.
🕗 8:00-9:00 a.m.
Residents and workers commute in the morning. Lines 1 and 2 are particularly busy.
🕔 17:00-18:00
Evening traffic. The boats are overcrowded on all lines towards Piazzale Roma and Ferrovia.
☀️ Summer weekends
Especially on cruise docking days. Line 2 is then often the better alternative to line 1.
Luggage on the vaporetto
You may take one piece of baggage with you, the total dimensions of which (length + width + height) must not exceed 150 cm. One small bag, rucksack or handbag is also permitted. A surcharge may apply for larger items of luggage - if in doubt, ask the staff at the bus stop in advance.
Finding the right stop and direction
At major stops such as San Zaccaria, Rialto or Fondamente Nove, there are several platforms (Dock A, B, C, D) where different lines depart in different directions. This will help you find your way around:
Reading overhead signs
Above each dock there is a sign with the line number and direction (e.g. „1 → Lido“ or „2 → P.le Roma“). Pay attention to the final stop.
Use the ACTV app
The official app „AVM Venezia“ (or „Che Bateo?“) shows real-time departure times and the correct platform. Google Maps also works well for ACTV connections.
Ask staff
At most of the larger stops, there are bus stop personnel who will show you the right platform. Simply state the line number and destination.
Accessibility and special rates
Wheelchair users pay a reduced single fare of €1.50 (75 min.), one accompanying person travels free of charge. Not all stops are wheelchair accessible - the major hubs such as Piazzale Roma, Ferrovia, Rialto, San Marco and Lido are generally wheelchair accessible. Children under the age of 6 travel free of charge on all ACTV lines in the city. Pets are allowed on the vaporetto with a muzzle and lead.
Vaporetto or water cab? The comparison
Many visitors to Venice confuse the vaporetto (the public water bus) with the private water cab. Both operate on the water, but the price, comfort and purpose are fundamentally different.

Conclusion: For the vast majority of tourists, the vaporetto is the right choice - cheaper, practical and part of the Venice experience. The water cab is particularly worthwhile for groups of 3-4 people or more, who share the costs, or as a luxury transfer from the airport directly to the hotel.
The 5 most common vaporetto mistakes
Voucher not redeemed at the machine
The online voucher is not a valid ticket. It must first be converted into a physical ticket at an ACTV machine before you can board the train.
Ticket not validated
Even a valid ticket is penalized if it has not been validated at the reader before the journey. Fine: 60 € or more.
Alilaguna boat taken with ACTV ticket
Alilaguna water buses (airport lines) look similar to ACTV vaporetti, but are a completely different operator. ACTV tickets are not valid there.
One-way ticket purchased for Murano + Burano
A 75-minute one-way ticket is not enough for an island excursion to Murano and Burano and back. The return journey from Burano alone takes 45 minutes. A day pass is always worthwhile here.
Waited at the wrong stop
Large stops such as San Zaccaria have up to 4 different docks (A-D) for different lines and directions. Always check the overhead signs.
